  • I recently spent a day on a landscape photography workshop with David. In advance of the day, David established my level of ability and expectations. His depth of knowledge of the area is astounding. He took me to several excellent locations. David encouraged me to think through aspects of composition and exposure. He made helpful suggestions, regarding the technical challenges of achieving correct exposure and maximising image sharpness. I chose David because his images are stunning, I was pleased to discover that he is also an excellent teacher who explains in an easy-to-understand style. David’s friendly, relaxed manner ensured an enjoyable and productive tour. I can highly recommend David’s workshops to photographers of all abilities as both inspirational and great value.

I’m astonished at the way you so quickly helped me to internalise the knowledge needed to use the manual setting on the camera.   • I had a fantastic 1:1 day. It is such a treat to spend a whole day learning from an expert. David quickly ascertained my level of technical knowledge and pitched his tuition perfectly. He made me think about what I was trying to achieve rather than just point, shoot and hope, to take my time and consider what I was doing before pressing the shutter as well as which lens and focal length I wanted. I am more interested in intimate scenes than wide vistas and we went to a number of places I haven’t visited before. He has given me some key points to take away and work on and lots of ideas to think about.

  • I spent a day with David in the Cairngorms and would absolutely recommend his course to anyone interested in improving their photography skills and camera know-how. It was such a great day, during which we visited several locations at a relaxed pace and experimented with different settings and subjects. The mix of sunshine and showers also provided some great lighting conditions! David is an expert, patient and encouraging teacher, and I definitely felt more confident as a photographer by the end of the day. I'm looking forward to practicing my skills, hopefully returning to the beautiful Cairngorms soon!

  • I had a really memorable weekend with David, in beautiful surroundings and with great tuition, plus wild camping overnight. Although used to the outdoors, I was pretty much a novice with the camera. David is so knowledgeable and a great teacher. I’m now taking my camera with me everywhere I go.   • David took my daughter and I out on an incredible day of scenery and tuition. He knows the Highlands like the back of his hand. My daughter wanted to improve her landscape photography and I wanted to photograph mountain hares. David pulled both out of the bag with flying colours. He is an exceptional teacher, patient, knowledgeable and with an incredible way of sharing his knowledge without making you feel silly. We have both continued to confidently use the skills David taught us and we are already planning on going back to him for another amazing day out.

  • I was a complete newbie when David took me out around Aviemore. His teaching style was patient and incredibly engaging. His substitution of a white board for a few sticks was inspired. He showed me how to get the most out of my DSLR and introduced me to a wide range of new skills that I continue to use and expand on today. On top of that David was great company throughout the day and took me to some great spots that looked amazing in the autumnal season.

  • David was a brilliant tutor and took us to some fantastic parts of the Cairngorms we would never have otherwise discovered. David was attentive, personable and I really felt the lesson was attuned to what I wanted to try and achieve. His tutoring both brought to life the important technical fundamentals required to improve my photography while also challenging me to think about what makes a better photo. The plan wasn’t too rigid and most importantly I had a really fun time. I came away taking better photographs, having seen some fantastic parts of the Cairngorms and with a greater desire to learn the skills and insights that help you take better pictures.

David was generous with his time and a great teacher, providing clear explanations, giving me plenty of opportunities to practice the skills we covered and pointing out shots that I would otherwise have missed.   • David took me up into the Cairngorms for two days. This was the second time I booked photography tuition. Personal tuition is really the thing to do to improve your skills. David watched me working and gave me some tips to work with. I now understand my camera better and the results were satisfying. I really can recommend David if you are in the Highlands. He knows a lot of places to take wonderful shots!

  • I spent three marvellous days with David, hiking and camping on the Isle of Skye. I thought I was more or less technically proficient, but David pushed me to switch to manual exposure and this was a huge impetus to be more careful and involved in what I was doing. He also stressed the importance of framing and composition techniques, and we applied this approach to various photo opportunities we encountered. I came away with a lot to mull over, and a deep desire to continue improving my photography. Very highly recommended!"

  • Spending two days wild camping and taking photos with David was challenging and amazing. I learned how to photograph rainbows over lakes and capture the essence of the vast Scottish landscape. David was always patient and generous with tips on improving my techniques and going deeper into my personal way of taking pictures. Not to mention sipping whisky together at dusk, listening to the rain drumming down and sharing past outdoor experiences. Unforgettable!

My son then used these pictures in an Art Portfolio he put together when applying for a scholarship. David was easy company, very knowledgeable and flexible in his approach.   • What an incredible 3 days of photography tuition! In stunning surroundings and perfect conditions for shooting landscapes, we learnt a variety of technical and compositional techniques (and plenty of other handy tips) under David's expert tuition. I came away delighted and feeling that my photography skills had gone up a few notches...so much so that I now have the first photo of my own that I'd consider hanging on my wall. If it's outdoor adventure and top notch tuition you're after, delivered in a very friendly manner, David's definitely yer man!

  • Had a great day of tuition in and around the Cairngorms. Even though the weather wasn't ideal, there was still plenty of interesting things to photograph. David was great at pointing out different subjects that I would have probably overlooked. The trip was a very good mix of learning compositional techniques, a bit of technical tuition with a bit of local knowledge of the area thrown in for good measure. David was very easy-going, with a huge wealth of knowledge, and the day went at a very relaxed pace, which was perfect for the area that we were in.

  • David really helped me sort out a fundamental flaw (judging correct exposure levels) in my technique that had been holding me back and frustrating me for years and introduced me to some new ideas for composition as well. Despite challenging conditions he was able to identify shots which tested the learning from earlier in the session and built upon them too, making use of interesting scenes and lighting we found throughout the two days.

With David's help I was able to get some fantastic photos that I would not otherwise have managed, in locations which I would not have known existed if I just explored on my own.
