Vanishing Point

An exercise in sensory deprivation.

Mountain weather is very changeable and will often dictate one’s movements and decisions. It can be highly disorientating, sensorially as well as pictorially. During my first experience of ‘whiteout’, I became convinced I was being followed, as the sound of my footsteps rebounded inside complete cloud cover. There are many similar stories of the uncanny, writ through mountain mythology. Over the years that followed I began to seek out similar conditions, to explore the boundary space where the self and place seem to dissolve, and to ask what happens to landscape photography when there is no landscape to photograph?
